On Sunday, June 7th, our largest group thus far containing over 140 middle school and 60 high school students arrived at the University of Louisville School of Music for the 2015 Summer Wind Band Institute. Upon arrival, students performed a placement audition to determine their placement for the week of camp. The middle school “White Band” was directed by Dr. Amy Acklin and the middle school “Red Band” by Ms. Teresa Elliott, while Dr. Frederick Speck conducted the High School Wind Ensemble.
The middle school campers attended camp at UofL from 9am – 5pm everyday. Each day consisted of theory classes, master classes, sectionals, and full band rehearsals. The high school campers focused on sectionals and rehearsals during the day and then enjoyed various group events in the evening including a movie night, an ice cream social, and a concert performed by the Chamber Winds Louisville Concert Band, directed by Dr. Speck, before heading to their dorm to close out the day.
A “Grand Finale” concert was given with over 500 people in attendance on Thursday, June 11th at 7:00 p.m. in Comstock Concert Hall. It was an outstanding concert allowing all of the students involved to show off the countless hours of hard work in rehearsals throughout the week. Many thanks to all of those who made this week such a huge success. We look forward to seeing you at the 2016 Summer Wind Band Institute.
